For more than three decades, multi-award-winning architect Dr Noel Robinson has been shaping the unique character of Noosa, blending innovative design with the shire’s precious natural environment.
The internationally recognised founder of Noel Robinson Architects (now the NRA Collaborative) has left an indelible mark on our local landscape – from iconic Hastings Street projects that transformed beach access for millions, to environmentally sensitive homes that seamlessly merge with Noosa National Park.
Earlier this year, Dr Robinson and his investment partner Andrew St Baker secured the tender for the former Tewantin TAFE site – a significant infill parcel adjacent to the Noosa Golf Club. Plans are underway to breathe new life into the decommissioned campus.
Dr Robinson’s expertise has long benefited Noosa Shire Council.
As an expert witness, he played a pivotal role in several successful planning applications.
Notably, in the late 1990s, his involvement helped defend the council against a massive $52 million compensation claim from the original developer at Settlers Cove.
“Without winning that case, the council would have been wiped out,” he recalls – a victory that safeguarded the shire’s future.
One of his standout projects is the multi-award-winning Domic residence at Sunshine Beach – a partially underground, carbon-neutral home that burrows sensitively into the dunes, extending the greenery of Noosa National Park over its domed roofs.
In Hastings Street, Dr Robinson’s vision enhanced Noosa’s world-famous vibe. In the late 1990s, he led a major upgrade to the Sheraton Noosa for Suncorp (which has become the Sofitel and now Elysium Noosa Resort), designing the acclaimed Cato’s Restaurant and incorporating a vital cross-site pedestrian link from Noosa Parade to the beachfront.
When Suncorp later sold an adjacent beachfront site, this link was fully realised – now enjoyed by millions of visitors annually.
He also designed Noosa on the Beach, a project of exclusive apartments featuring popular oceanfront restaurants that activate Main Beach. This created a second invaluable pedestrian connection from Hastings Street directly to the sands.
These links have become essential threads in Noosa’s pedestrian-friendly fabric, easing access to our stunning beaches without relying on cars.
More recently, Dr Robinson has advised council on key developments, including The Calile at Settlers Cove and major extensions at Noosa Civic, focusing on urban design and regional master planning. He continues to guide sensitive residential applications that protect visual amenity and the green spaces embedded in our planning scheme.
As Noosa grows, Dr Robinson’s contributions remind us why our shire remains one of Australia’s most loved destinations – a perfect harmony of built form and nature.
