Hampers packed for delivery

On Tuesday 16 December, St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland members and volunteers rolled up their sleeves to pack hundreds of Christmas hampers for Noosa families doing it tough, bringing the true spirit of Christmas to those who need it most.

Thanks to the dedication of 484 members, 735 volunteers and generous donors, the Society has supported 18,376 vulnerable people in the Northern Diocese this year, providing essential services like emergency accommodation, food assistance and access to vital support programs.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues, Christmas is becoming more stressful than joyful for many families who are forced to choose between paying rent, covering bills, putting food on the table or ensuring their children wake up to a gift on Christmas morning.

In 2024, the Society hand-delivered 5,776 Christmas hampers across the state, filled with festive food and children’s toys for families struggling through the most expensive time of year.

Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Conference (Noosa/Tewantin) President Jill Weychardt said the rising cost of living in Noosa and surrounding areas means more families are quietly struggling than many people realise.

“In the Noosa District, we have families who are working full-time, sometimes multiple jobs, and they’re still struggling to afford the basics let alone Christmas,” she said.

“These hampers take the pressure off. Parents can give their children a proper Christmas without having to sacrifice rent money or skip grocery shopping for weeks afterward.”

“The community support we receive through the Christmas Appeal is incredible. It shows that people understand times are tough and they want to help their neighbours get through it with dignity.”
