Heroes behind the flags

Noosa’s coastline will turn red and yellow next week as Sunshine Beach Surf Club celebrates Red and Yellow Day, honouring the volunteer lifesavers who patrol the beach and protect the community.

The club will mark the national initiative on Wednesday 4 March, joining surf clubs across Australia in recognising the volunteers who give their time to keep beaches safe and promote the importance of swimming between the flags.

At Sunshine Beach, the day will shine a spotlight on the local lifesavers who conduct patrols, perform rescues and educate beachgoers throughout the season.

The club will be transformed in red and yellow, with members and guests encouraged to wear the iconic colours of surf lifesaving.

A highlight of the day will be the “Ask a Lifesaver” activation booth, running from 1pm to 7pm.

Volunteer lifesavers will be available to chat about how patrols operate, share real-life rescue experiences, offer beach safety tips, and provide information on joining Nippers or becoming a volunteer.

Families can also take part in children’s activities including red and yellow colouring stations, beach safety trivia and prizes for the best dressed young supporters. Donations will be welcomed throughout the day to support vital lifesaving equipment, training and volunteer development.

The celebrations will continue from 5.30pm with a special Red and Yellow Day Members Night, featuring a live Volunteer Q&A and recognition segment hosted by Supporters Club President Warick Redwood. Members will hear directly from local lifesavers about their most memorable rescues, why they volunteer, common beach safety myths and how the community can support the club.

Volunteer contributions will also be recognised, including Patrol 88’s lifetime volunteer hours, recent significant rescues and Volunteer of the Month acknowledgements.

General Manager Julie Strudwick said the day was about celebrating the people who quietly give so much to protect the Noosa community.

“Our volunteers are the heroes behind the flags,” she said. “Every season they give their time, energy and courage to keep our beach safe. Red & Yellow Day is our opportunity to say thank you and to help our community better understand the vital role they play.

“Red and Yellow Day is more than a celebration of volunteering, surf sports and nippers – it represents opportunity. From beach to bar, our club creates pathways for leadership, career progression and personal growth. The red and yellow doesn’t just shape lifesavers – it shapes futures.”

The club is encouraging all Noosa residents to attend, wear red and yellow and celebrate the proud tradition of surf lifesaving.
