The world’s best bodysurfers will descend on the Sunshine Coast this week for the World Bodysurfing Titles.
The Sunshine Coast was unanimously chosen to host one of the world’s most dynamic surfing competitions, the International Bodysurfing Association (IBSA) World Bodysurfing titles, from Monday 28 April to Wednesday 7 May.
The decision was driven by the outstanding success of the Coolum Wedge Bodysurf Festival, now in its fifth consecutive year.
A total of 96 elite bodysurfers from 15 countries will compete across four days of thrilling competition, scheduled flexibly over the 10-day event to align with the best surf conditions.
Five secret locations have been nominated and as the festival unfolds, the event organisers make a call as to when and where the next day of competition will be held.
This format will allow the world’s best bodysurfers to showcase their incredible skills and will culminate in the crowning of the male and female world champions.
Leading into the world titles, the Coolum Wedge Bodysurfing festival will again take place from Friday 25 April – Sunday 27 April. This event is for all ages and abilities and is famous for its fun and camaraderie.
Event organisers Lynda Franklin and Darren Verrenkamp said the Australasian team includes a strong contingent of South East Queensland competitors including:
– Susie O’Neill – Multi-Olympic gold medallist
– Jack Lewis – 5th place finisher at last year’s World Bodysurfing Championships in Hawaii and the Captain of the Australian Team, The Aussie Ospreys
– Pipi Cathcart – At just 15 years old, the team’s youngest competitor has secured a direct spot in the Finals.
Lynda said she hopes locals and tourists alike will take advantage of the opportunity to experience the world championships with the event happening right on our doorstep.
“Bodysurfing is a sport for everyone – many of us grew up doing it. Prepare to be wowed as you watch the world’s best in action and who knows, perhaps you’ll even reignite your own passion for this exhilarating pastime!” Lynda said.
Darren, the IBSA Secretary-General, added that while the Sunshine Coast is famous for its beautiful beaches and great surf, the event is also an opportunity to experience more of what the region has to offer.
“We’re working with local businesses to support the event, and one initiative we’re particularly excited about is the Coolum Coffee Trail, where visitors can sample our renowned coffee culture,” Darren said.
“All of the international competitors are excited not only for the competition, but also to explore the Sunshine Coast’s pristine national parks, hinterland towns and of course see all the unique animals at Australia Zoo. The event organisers have put together group tours for each of these attractions.”
Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said securing the titles was a fantastic coup for the region.

“The titles will showcase the Sunshine Coast as a premier destination for international sporting events and help drive sustainable economic growth for our community.
