Asbestos dumpers face huge fine

NOOSA Council is calling on residents to help bring the culprits who dumped more than three tonnes of asbestos roof sheets near Eenie Creek Bridge to justice.
Councillor Joe Jurisevic said the asbestos, which was probably dumped over the weekend, could have put the public at risk if disturbed.
“Fortunately the location, and the fact that the dumping was quickly reported and cordoned off by our officers, alleviated any immediate risk, but this is still a very serious offence which could attract fines of more than $120,000,” Cr Jurisevic said.
“Our initial estimate is that it will cost more than $15,000 to safely remove and dispose of the asbestos.”
The council is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity near the bridge between Eenie Creek Road and Walter Hay Drive in recent days to come forward.
“We’d also ask anyone who may know the person responsible, or where the material was removed from, to contact council on (07) 5329 6500,” Cr Jurisevic said.
Council officers secured the area, beside Walter Hay Drive, on 1 August.
“There was some protective clothing dumped with the roofing material showing that the offenders obviously took steps to protect themselves and were aware of the health implications of dealing with the asbestos,” Cr Jurisevic said.
“It’s a shame they have not shown the same level of regard for the safety of other residents or the environment.”
The council will be examining any evidence left at the scene and working with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland to identify the offenders.
