Undefeated junior girls win flag

THE under-14 Noosa Dolphins Rugby 7s team have taken out the inaugural season women’s season with a thrilling win over Caloundra.
The team ran undefeated through the season racking up an impressive 16 wins in a row before taking to the field in the grand final on Friday 2 September, and walking away champions with a score of 24 to 12.
Coach Brent Mitchell said the team played exceptionally well throughout the first ever junior women’s competition for the region.
“The best part is each team got better each week,” he said. “It was great to see, and the girls really put in the effort coming to training every Sunday.”
Brent said the key to remaining undefeated for the season came down to making the sport fun and enjoyable for the players.
“There’s a saying that girls have to be happy in order to win and that’s something we focused on every week; making sure it was fun,” he said.
Brent said he hoped the players, who secured an average score rate of 25.9 points per game, would return for the 2017 season.
The remaining junior teams also had a great weekend on the field.
The under-12 Noosa Fins also played at Caloundra this weekend, defeating Matthew Flinders 36-7 taking them into the grand final next weekend against Sunshine Coast Grammar.
The under-14 Dolphins defeated Caloundra with a 22-5 point win, which also puts them into the grand final against Sunshine Coast Grammar.
For the under-16 team, they secured their spot in the grand final after defeating University 31-nil. The grand finals will be held at Stockland Park Stadium on Sunday 11 September.
