More arrests expected in pre-Schoolies drug busts

NEWS that police have seized over $1.25 million in drugs in a pre-Schoolies operation is good news for hundreds of Noosa parents who will farewell their graduates as they head for the Gold Coast and Bali tomorrow.
Police from State Crime Command’s Drug and Serious Crime Group have closed a week-long operation focussed on drug traffickers from Mackay to the Gold Coast in the lead-up to Schoolies.
Following investigations by the State Drug Squad and as part of a concerted effort by the Queensland Police Service (QPS) to target drug trafficking, the operation focused on targets involved in the distribution of ice (methylamphetamine), ecstasy (MDMA) and cannabis.
During the week, police executed 35 search warrants in locations including addresses on the Sunshine and Gold Coasts.
A total of 46 people have been charged with 164 offences including seven charges of trafficking dangerous drugs, 25 charges of supply dangerous drugs, and three charges of produce dangerous drugs.
As part of the operation, police seized about $1.25 million worth of drugs, three sophisticated hydroponic cannabis growing systems, over 260 cannabis plants at a number of addresses and a clandestine illicit drug lab for producing ice was located at a Wynnum address.
Detective Inspector Mark Slater of the State Crime Command’s Drug and Serious Crime Group said the QPS was determined to target people who cause harm in the community.
“With Schoolies celebrations commencing later this week, this is a warning to drug traffikers and prospective customers alike that police efforts in targeting drug distribution will continue to be a major focus,” he said.
Police investigations are continuing and further arrests are expected.
