Spine awareness is safety back-up

SPINAL health was the hot topic when Ben Riley from the Spinal Education Awareness Team (SEAT) paid Sunshine Beach State School students a visit last week.
SEAT is a preventative program initiated by www.spinal.com.au and delivered by volunteers who have a spinal cord injury, such as Ben, and share their personal experience and important safety messages with people of all ages.
Ben told his personal story of his devastating trail bike accident which resulted in his lifelong injuries.
The presentations covered topics such as how the spine and spinal cord work, disability awareness, playing sport safely, making good choices when with friends, peer pressure, road safety and water safety.
The presentation was said to have made an impression on the students with Mitchell from year five saying the presentation opened his eyes.
“The presentation from SEAT really made me realise how bad spinal injuries really are and how your spine is one of the most important parts of your body,” he said.
A Sunshine Beach State School spokesperson said the school was aware of the importance of educating its students from an early age about the importance of staying safe for life.
