The Duke and Duchess of Sussex waved to fans on a jetty on Fraser Island (K’Gari), north of Noosa, on Monday after Prince Harry dedicated a forest to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (QCC) and Meghan took a break from official duties.

About 200 locals and guests greeted the relaxed-looking couple with gifts and well wishes.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk joined the newly weds, describing the royal visit to the World Heritage-listed area as a boost to preserving the iconic region.

Prince Harry said the island needed to be saved for future generations.

“At a time when there are so many natural world heritage sites under threat, it is more important than ever to protect this island,” he said.

Prince Harry toured the island meeting with local elders of the Butchulla People and National Park rangers to learn about the cultural significance of the world’s largest sand island and its rich biodiversity.

The couple planned to stay the evening on the island.
