Australia Day attracts all creatures

Would you like to get up close to some snake, lizards, turtles and crocodiles this Australia Day?

Then come along to the Noosa Australia Day Festival on the Noosa River and visit Luke’s Reptile Kingdom.

Luke Cheyne started collecting reptiles from the age of five and his love for the animals continues to grow along with his ambitions to teach people more about them.

Growing up as a show kid his life was regularly on the road travelling with his family from show to show.

Six years ago he fulfilled his lifelong ambition to open a reptile park on the Gold Coast but now his travelling spirit has returned and this week launched the country’s biggest mobile Reptile Kingdom at the Showman’s Guild at Yatala, south of Brisbane.

“We’ll have up to 500 animals and take them to venues like agricultural shows and schools,” Luke said of the new show which will operate from a converted semi-trailer and include display enclosures.

Luke will bring along some non-venomous reptiles when he visits Noosa to join a diverse range of entertaining activities, music and food at the Noosa Australia Day Festival on Saturday 26 January from 7am to 5pm.

Festival organiser Jacqui Nichols said entry to the festival was free and funds raised would support local charities United Synergies, Katie Rose Cottage and St Vincent de Paul.

“We’ll have a knockout line-up for everyone so bring the family, grab your friends and come along to the Noosa Australia Day Festival,” Jacqui said. “We’re bringing Lions Park in Noosaville to life with Cheap Fakes headlining great Aussie talent on the main stage, and plenty of kids’ fun, amusement rides and fabulous food stalls in the park all day.

“We also have comedians, a magician, pony rides, classic cars, baby wallabies and plenty more fun.”

The festival starts with the Rotary Big Breakfast from 7am to 10am with music from Harii Bandhu. The live music and family fun continues from 10am on the main stage with Nickleby the magician, and music from Tribal Groove, Andrea Kirwin Band, David Flower Band, Living in the ’70s, The Lyrical and Cheap Fakes.

The festival, in its fourth year, is organised by volunteers from Tewantin Noosa Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads and has grown from about 1200 people attending in the first year, to more than 8500 people in 2018.
