World surfers take home a piece of Noosa

Noosa Surf Art Expo organiser and celebrated surf artist Owen Cavanagh created unique trophies for the Noosa Festival of Surfing this year.

Owen’s favourite of all the trophies he created was for the winners of the World Surf League Longboarding Championships, which he made out of pieces of local hardwood from his father’s farm.

“I love seeing the look on surfers faces when they see the trophy. It’s really cool that they get to take a piece of Noosa home with them,” Owen said.

The fifth annual Noosa Surf Art Expo features the longest list of activities its ever seen, with more than 40 local artists and a series of live art demonstrations and competitions.

The Expo kicked off last weekend in conjunction with the Noosa Festival of Surfing, at Noosa Brewing Co. and runs until Sunday 10 March.

The last market day will be held on Saturday 9 March from 11am to 5pm with live art demonstrations, chainsaw sculpting and interactive art workshops for the community to enjoy.

“The biggest thing at the exhibition this year is the variety of talented artists we have from the Sunshine Coast,” Owen said.

“This year we’ve had heaps of people come down to check out the expo and we’ve sold a lot of art already.”

Artist Matt James created the feature piece which is on show just outside the Noosa Brewing Co., a shark made out of recycled bolts and pieces.

So far during the Surf Art Expo, Owen has raised over $800 for two local charities, Surf Rider Foundation Sunshine Coast and The Board Meeting Surf Charity, with funds raised from a gold coin donation upon entry.

To check out the Surf Art Expo this weekend head to Noosa Brewing Co. at 85 Rene Street, Noosaville and to see more of Owens art visit www.solearte.com.au.
