Noosa Council says it is making “steady progress on the extensive repairs required” to Tingira Crescent at Sunrise Beach, where a huge sinkhole opened up on Sunday 19 January after heavy rainfall, taking a section of road and footpath.
The council says the sinkhole was caused by a blocked stormwater pipe a short distance from nearby apartments and the beach. ‘Ground anchors’ were initially put in place to prevent any further collapse.
Contractors have been on site this week installing gabion baskets – a wire cage packed with rocks – to “strengthen the slope and protect the bank from future erosion”.
Pedestrian access has been reinstated but the road is likely to be closed for another three weeks.
