Already in 2021, 267 people have lost their lives on Queensland roads, and police are pleading with travellers to reach their destinations safely.
Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, the Honourable Mark Ryan MP, joined Assistant Commissioner Ben Marcus to launch the Christmas road safety campaign, Operation Tango Mistletoe.
With the commencement of school holidays and the opening of the Queensland border on Monday, police are preparing for an increased number of vehicles on the road as families travel to their holiday destinations.
To ensure drivers are contributing to a safe trip for all road users, police will be increasing their presence on highways and roads, with a focus on deterring and detecting speeding drivers and encouraging fatigued drivers to take a break on long trips.
Assistant Commissioner Marcus urged drivers to take their time travelling to their destinations, and to plan frequent rest stops.
“With the school holidays now upon us and more of us poised to travel to spend Christmas with our loved ones, we expect to see an increased number of drivers on our roads,” Assistant Commissioner Marcus said.
“We are asking drivers to be patient and courteous on the roads, but also to enjoy their trip and stop for a break when needed.
“Driver fatigue is one of the leading factors contributing to road crashes and can have a direct consequence on your life and those around you.
“If you are heading off on a long trip these holidays, take responsibility for your actions. When possible, arrange to share the driving, and build rest stops into your trip every two hours.
“I want to urge all drivers planning to travel long distances these holidays to please take your time, because every decision you make behind the wheel counts.”
Minister Ryan said his wish for Christmas was to ensure all travellers reached their destinations safely.
“Queenslanders are excited to be able to travel to see family and friends, and to travel to holiday destinations this Christmas,” Minister Ryan said.
“We have a beautiful state in Queensland, and it can be a pleasure to take a leisurely drive to your destination. I want to encourage anyone undertaking a road trip to make regular stops along your drive to take in some of the spectacular scenery and local businesses Queensland has to offer.
“The worst thing we could see this time of year is more people missing from the Christmas dinner table due to tragedy on our roads.
“We want everyone to have a happy and safe school holiday period, and that starts with arriving at your destination safely.”
