More than 160 families fleeing domestic violence on the Sunshine Coast can now access life-saving support, thanks to the new SunnyKids ’Save A Life Tonight’ (SALT) – an Australian-first initiative, launched at the annual SunnyKids Mayoral Ball on 29 October.
SunnyKids general manager Kathleen Hope said, “Every $300 donation to SALT helps a family in need access an emergency night of accommodation, safety planning, essential needs and an instant village of support.“
“This year’s event raised over $48,000 for SALT – that’s immediate help for over 160 people in our community.“
More than 300 attendees were treated to a delicious four-course dinner by Noosa Waterfront Restaurant and premium beverages featuring Brockenchack Wine and Moffat Beach Brewing Co Beer.
“I acknowledge that none of this could have been possible without the generosity, kindness, and support of our community, including the patron of this event and SunnyKids, Mayor Mark Jamieson,” she added.
The evening began with a Welcome to Country by traditional land owners from the Gubbi Gubbi people, sharing stories about the land guests gathered on.
There was also a speech from Cara, who told her story, and the important role SunnyKids played in helping change her life.
Guests also danced the night away with Andrea Kerwin and the Hamilton Band.
“This event represents an opportunity for businesses and individuals to give back to the community in which we reside and to truly make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children and their families on the Sunshine Coast,“ Kathleen said.
“It takes a village to raise a child and that was evident through the support received at this year’s SunnyKids Mayoral Ball.“
