A young Imbil woman is one of two people charged with manslaughter over the death of a six-year-old Roma boy, in a highway crash near Injune 12 months ago.
Crash investigators wrapped up their year-long probe and charged the two with multiple offences each.
A 34-year-old Roma man has been charged with one count each of manslaughter, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and taking a protected animal, according to a police announcement last Friday (6 January).
A 19-year-old Imbil woman has been charged with one count each of manslaughter and taking a protected animal.
Both were granted police bail and are expected to appear in Roma Magistrates Court next Tuesday (17 January).
Police last week said investigators would allege the woman and the boy were passengers in a southbound 4wd vehicle, which ran off the Carnarvon Highway, about 20km north of Injune.”
Her co-accused was allegedly driving the white Toyota Landcruiser, which rolled several times before coming to a stop in the northbound lane.
They were returning from a kangaroo-shooting trip nearby, a police spokesperson said.
“Detectives will allege the adults were able to free themselves, however the boy was not removed from the vehicle and was subsequently struck by a passing prime mover and died at the scene,” according to a published statement.
The crash was at the beginning of what police say was a tragic 2022, with 299 road deaths.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey last week promised a summit of transport experts to recommend changes.
