Three people killed in highway crash

Three people have been killed in a car crash in the Noosa Shire.

Three people have been killed in a car crash in the Noosa Shire after the driver of an alleged stolen vehicle chased another car into oncoming traffic along the Bruce Highway.

Preliminary investigations indicate just before 4am on 21 July in in Federal, police were alerted an allegedly stolen vehicle chasing a man and woman in another vehicle Northbound along the Bruce Highway attempting to ram it, when both vehicles crossed into Southbound lanes.

A collision occurred between those two cars and third car which was heading Southbound, driven by a 38-year-old woman.

A 65-year-old man driving and the passenger, a 25-year-old woman, in the second vehicle and the 38-year-old woman in the third vehicle all died at the scene.

A 25-year-old man in the alleged stolen vehicle suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Gympie Hospital, then transferred to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital where he remains under guard.

The car containing the 25-year-old man was allegedly stolen during a robbery on Young Street, Gympie just before 4.30pm yesterday.

At this time, Police are investigating what relationship or interaction the occupant of the stolen vehicle and occupants of the second vehicle may have had prior to this incident.

Investigators would like to speak to any witnesses and anyone with relevant dash-cam footage who was travelling on the Bruce Highway between Gympie and the Noosa exit between 3am and 4am today.

The stolen vehicle is a white 2019, Isuzu MUX bearing Queensland registration BEC 263. Police are requesting anyone who has dash cam footage of this vehicle or sighted this vehicle after 4:30pm on 20 July 2023, to contact Crimestoppers.

Investigations by detectives from the Sunshine Coast District CIB and Forensic Crash Unit are ongoing.
