In celebration of Harmony Week, members of the Queensland Police Service (QPS) came together for a morning tea held at Police Headquarters on Tuesday 19 March, to recognise the rich diversity within both the Service and the community.
Harmony Week runs from 18-24 March, and focuses on celebrating diversity and inclusion in our workplaces and communities, highlighting the importance of respecting all Australians, regardless of culture or linguistic background.
The morning tea was an opportunity for members of the QPS to celebrate cultures through multicultural foods and to hear from key speakers, such as Senior Sergeant Cindel Richardson from the Multicultural Affairs Unit (MAU).
Senior Sergeant Richardson, spoke on what work is currently being done in the multicultural space, as well as the significance of 21 March, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which falls within Harmony Week.
“Harmony Week is a momentous time to celebrate the inclusiveness of everyone in the workplace and our community, regardless of cultural background,” Senior Sergeant Cindel Richardson said.
“Although we work tirelessly to ensure there is a sense of belonging for everyone, racial discrimination is still prevalent amongst our communities.
“This week aims to focus on inclusivity, respect, and appreciating the rich diversity that makes our Service a vibrant and unique one.
“Harmony Week is an important reminder for us all to pause and reflect on the diversity within our Service, and the richness this provides to both our organisation and our Queensland communities.”
