Queensland Day Award for Katie Rose Hospice volunteers

The 2024 Noosa Queensland Day Awards are all about honouring some inspirational locals.

There are dozens of deserving nominees who will be honoured at Noosa MP Sandy Bolton’s Queensland Day ceremony at The J on Tuesday 6 June.

This week we put another two of those nominees in the spotlight – Christine Barry and Bernie Murphy from Katie Rose Cottage Hospice.

Christine has been a nurse all of her working life and has served and cared for so many, giving of herself to ensure the wellbeing of others.

Since Katie Rose Cottage Hospice commenced in 2016, Christine has volunteered offering her time in two capacities.

Firstly, as a nurse/ carer, and secondly as a retailer at one of the op shops that raise funds for the charity.

Volunteering has been an enormous part of Christine’s life. She has done so quietly, professionally, and lovingly with a kindness beyond compare.

As a nurse at the hospice, she has sat with hundreds of people in their last moments.

In doing so, she has cared for not only the person passing, also the wife, husband or partner, children and extended family.

She has passionately cared for all with deep love and affection giving of herself to serve these residents without fanfare or recognition.

Another of our Katie Rose Cottage Hospice volunteers that has been recognised for her beautiful efforts is Bernadette Bernie Murphy, who has been volunteering at the hospice for more than five years.

Bernie is an essential member of the team, cherished by all for her warm, reassuring presence.

A retired registered nurse, her wealth of knowledge enriches the nursing staff and her conscientious nature and remarkable empathy toward patients and their families shines through in all she does, creating the loving and family environment that Katie Rose is so well known for.

Bernie sees dedicating her time to residents in their last days and their loved ones in their last days as an honour and willingly gives her time.

“Katie Rose Cottage Hospice holds a special place in my heart, especially the many incredible volunteers that are with our loved ones, and us, in the most heart breaking of times.

“There are no words to convey the gratitude we have for every single one of them in the many roles in ensuring our last days are full of love and care. Acknowledging Christine and Bernie is just one step in saying thank you to them, and all at Katie Rose,” Ms Bolton said.

The Noosa Electorate Queensland Day awards are an initiative of Noosa MP Sandy Bolton with sponsorship support from Noosa Today and Cooroy RSL.

Nominations closed for the awards on Wednesday 22 May and a full list of award nominees will be available at sandybolton.com/qld-day-awards following the ceremony on 6 June.
