For those seeking an exhilarating night on the ‘wildest ride in the universe’ it’s time to grab your tickets to LASSÚ, launching in Maroochydore this weekend.
The Cosmic Cabaret is a bold, risqué circus like no other and opened to rave reviews in Perth in January and is travelling Australia with performances in Newcastle finishing last week.
According to Broadway World, the circus and cabaret with a modern twist brings out the crowd’s energy and leaves everyone simply awestruck.
The debut production for Merrik Ashton, a seventh-generation circus performer born into Australia’s renowned Ashton family, is set in LASSÙ, a Cosmic Cabaret Saloon perched on the galaxy’s edge, where space cowboys, alien drifters, and the legendary Rodeo Sisters dazzle with out-of-this-world acts.
Rodeo Clown Rusty journeys through the golden days of LASSÙ, determined to revive the magic that once filled the saloon where guests are immersed in a story where past and future collide in a spectacular, risqué circus experience.
With performing arts quite literally in his blood, Merrik has spent nearly three decades perfecting his craft taking him across Australia, the United States, and most prestigiously to the New Generation Monte Carlo Circus Festival at 18, where he and his brother earned multiple awards.
Now thirty-one, producer Merrik said the Lassu team are all very excited to open on Friday for the show’s first trip to the Sunshine Coast.
“I am so proud of this show – it’s a world class production and everyone who sees it will agree, I’m sure.”
Merrik said he hasn’t been back to the Sunshine Coast since he performed with his parents on Infamous and had forgotten what a stunning place it is.
He said guests will delight in the passion put into the show by the team and by creative director Mitchell Woodcock.
“Mitchell is amazing and already so accomplished as a creative director. He had just finished choreography for Annie, and we are so grateful to even have him on board and be so into it.”
“He always had the show’s best interests at heart and really is a genius and it will be interesting to watch his career as he has so much ahead of him.”
“Our guests won’t believe the production quality and talent in the show; it really is incredible.”
Merrik said, “We were so happy with Newcastle. It was an amazing season, and we got a really good response from the crowd.”
As this is his first show since performing with his family, he said, “I am proud of so many aspects off what we do. I feel very proud of my first production but with the logistical side and council permits and as a new business owner out on my own there is the apprehension side of it too.”
“Growing up, I saw how much work was involved in the business and I thought there was no way I would follow my parents because of so much work. But as I got a bit older and had kids of my own, I thought I don’t want to be handed a company, I want to make my own mark and do something on my own.”
While the show is only open to people over eighteen due to the perhaps risqué content and the service of alcohol, Merrik said the show appeals to the younger demographic eighteen plus for the themes and the older demographic will enjoy the much higher level of production involved which makes the show a stand out. He said, “They appreciate that, and there is something for everyone.”
When they leave the Sunshine Coast the show will move to North Lakes before heading to up to Mackay, Townsville then they will perform a city event in Brisbane.
“LASSÚ is a carefully curated blend of modern and traditional circus, dance, and burlesque, woven together with a captivating narrative.”
“Audience members won’t be left wondering about the story; they’ll be fully immersed in it.”
“For Merrik, LASSÙ represents the next evolution of live performance, one that embraces spectacle, storytelling, and raw talent in a way that is both thrilling and unforgettable.”
Lassu is on at Dalton Drive, Maroochydore. from 16 May to 14 June. They will then move to North Lakes from 20 June to 6 July before they head further north.
