Multi-sensory show comes to Sunshine Coast

Wonderbox, a captivating multi-sensory theatre experience for young people with disability, is coming to The Events Centre, Caloundra for up to eight performances from 10–13 June, as part of a national tour by Sensorium Theatre.

Audiences are invited inside the Wonderbox — a giant puzzle-box of illusions where a quirky cast of carnival friends leads participants through a sensory-rich world of enchanting projections, curious miniature surprises, and vibrant live music. Each child’s curiosity is recognised, nurtured, and celebrated through playful, personalised engagement.

Sunshine Coast audiences will be the first to experience this whimsical theatre performance on the South East Queensland leg of the tour, which also includes performances at QPAC (Brisbane), HOTA (Gold Coast), and Redland Performing Arts Centre.

Sensorium Theatre, based in Perth, is Australia’s leading theatre company creating live performance specifically for children with disability, including those on the autism spectrum and with complex or multiple access needs.

For over 12 years, they’ve inspired and delighted young audiences both nationally and internationally with their uniquely immersive, accessible productions with Wonderbox being their latest creation.

“It’s magical to watch even the most tentative children grow more curious during the show. There’s such joy for the entire circle of care, parents, teachers, and support staff, as they witness imagination unlocking potential,” says co-artistic director Francis Italiano.

“For us, the magic is in meeting each child exactly where they’re at — inviting their curiosity, then joyously celebrating their wonderment.”

“Wonderbox is perhaps our most child-led show yet. Each audience member navigates their own journey of wonder as the magic gently unfolds around them.”

Sensorium’s approach has received praise from educators across the country.

“Sensorium put a lot of thought into how best to meet the needs of a diversity of students. Their recognition of how students with a range of disabilities need their needs met is to be applauded,” said a representative from Sir David Brand School.

Wonderbox will be at The Events Centre, Caloundra from 10-13 June.

Tickets $32 per person (accompanying carers are free)
