While most 17-year-olds are focused on school and exams, Sunshine Coast Grammar Year 12 student Jack Taylor is busy preparing to fly to help end famine.
In an ambitious twist on the traditional 40-Hour Famine fundraiser, Jack will complete 40 touch-and-gos in a light aircraft to raise money to fight world hunger through World Vision.
This is the second year Jack has participated in the 40-Hour Famine in this way, after raising nearly $1800 in 2024.
This year, he hopes to go even higher – both in altitude and fundraising.
“Flying is my passion, and this was a way I could turn that into something meaningful,” Jack said.
“I’ve spent years listening to teachers speak about important global issues and it finally hit me – it’s time to stop just learning and actually do something.“
Long gone are the days when the 40-Hour Famine meant just giving up food. The iconic campaign has evolved over the years, encouraging young Australians to take action in ways that fit their passions, skills and lifestyles.
Whether it’s quitting social media, walking for 40km, or flying a plane 40 times, it’s about doing something bold to support children facing the effects of hunger.

“Whether it’s giving up food or technology, to walking or doing the courageous feat Jack is, students are showing that no matter your age, you can be a powerful force for change.
“Every effort counts, and together they’re helping to create a better future for children living in crisis around the world.”
Sunshine Coast Grammar School principal Anna Owen said, “What makes Jack’s effort so inspiring is that he’s connecting his passion for aviation with his growing awareness of this important global issue. It’s exactly the kind of active citizenship we foster in our students.”
Jack is now calling on the Sunshine Coast community and local businesses to get behind his flight plan by sharing and donating to his fundraiser.
“It would mean a lot to have the community’s support,” Jack said.
“Every take-off and landing is a step toward helping a child who goes to bed hungry every night.
“Together, we can really make a difference.”
Jack is hiring a Sling 2 light sport aircraft from GoFly Aviation, based at Caloundra airport, and flying on:

It’s expected to take four to five hours to complete the 40 touch and gos.
