Wheels to the Waves: New beach wheelchair available for hire in Noosa

Visitors of all abilities can now enjoy the sun, surf and sand in Noosa, thanks to a new beach wheelchair available for hire at the Noosa Visitor Information Centre on Hastings Street.

The initiative, known as ‘Wheels to the Waves’, is the result of a wonderful community fundraising effort, with generous contributions from Events 4 Greater Good, the Tewantin Lions Club, and Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton, with Councillor Amelia Lorentson playing a pivotal role in bringing together local champions and advocating for increased accessibility in our region.

Designed to roll easily over sand and float in calm waters, the beach wheelchair allows people with mobility challenges to access Noosa’s stunning beaches without sinking or stress. It’s easy to use, with half-day and full-day hire options available through the Visitor Information Centre. The chair also comes with an alternate set of wheels for off-road terrain – ideal for exploring the tracks of Noosa National Park. Tourism Noosa chief executive officer, Sharon Raguse, said the initiative aligns with Noosa’s commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive destination.

“We’re thrilled to offer the beach wheelchair as part of the services at our Hastings Street centre. It’s a simple but powerful step towards improving accessibility and ensuring everyone can enjoy Noosa’s natural beauty,” she said.

The launch of the wheelchair also aligns with Queensland’s broader vision for inclusive tourism under Towards Tourism 2032 and D2045: Queensland’s Disability Plan, which aims to make the state a leader in accessibility and inclusion ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Paralympic and Olympic Games.

“As the world turns its attention to Queensland in the lead-up to the 2032 Games, initiatives like this ensure Noosa plays its part in creating a more inclusive visitor experience,” Ms Raguse added.

Councillor Amelia Lorentson said she was proud to see the vision come to life. “This project reflects the heart of our Noosa community – inclusive, generous and determined to make a difference. By working together, we’ve made Noosa’s beaches more accessible, and I’m grateful to everyone who contributed.”

Sandy Bolton MP echoed the sentiment, praising the community spirit behind the initiative “Wheels to the Waves is a shining example of what can be achieved when our community comes together to remove barriers.”

“Since resident Libby first contacted our office in 2020 for better access to Noosa Beach for those with disability, we have been thrilled to assist with the all abilities mat in 2022 and now this wheelchair through grants of $14,500 to ensure all abilities can experience what many of us take for granted. Whether you are a local or a visitor, everyone deserves to experience the joy of Noosa’s beautiful beaches.”

The chair is ideal for visitors of all ages and is available by pre-booking. Trained volunteers at the Centre can assist with bookings and provide information about accessible beach access points and facilities nearby.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity and collaboration of so many community members,” added Ms Raguse. “We thank Councillor Lorentson, Sandy Bolton MP Events 4 Greater Good, and the Tewantin Lions Club for helping make Noosa a more inclusive destination.”

Costs are $15 for half day or $25 for the full day. To book visitors can contact the Noosa Visitor Information Centre at info@visitnoosa.com.au or speak with a team member in person.
