Stress toolkit for Christmas

As Noosa residents brace for another busy festive season amid continuing cost-of-living pressures, Beyond Blue and Financial Counselling Australia have released a new free toolkit to help people manage both their money and their mental health.

The Money and Mental Health Toolkit, available now on the Beyond Blue website, provides practical guidance on budgeting, coping with stress, dealing with banks and utility companies, and finding the right support early.

The launch comes as demand for financial help continues to surge. The National Debt Helpline recorded almost 170,000 calls and online chats in the 12 months to the end of October. Beyond Blue’s latest Mental Health and Wellbeing Check also revealed that financial pressure is now the leading cause of distress, affecting nearly half of all respondents.

Beyond Blue CEO Georgie Harman AO said the festive season can amplify stress for many households, including those in the Noosa Shire.

“There are so many expectations around this season and that can bring added pressure, especially when money is tight,” she said.

“Financial stress can lead to sleep issues, relationship strain and a sense of hopelessness. But the relationship goes both ways — when someone’s mental health declines, it becomes harder to manage money or seek support.”

Financial Counselling Australia CEO Dr Domenique Meyrick said the toolkit offers a non-judgemental starting point for people feeling overwhelmed.

“Financial stress can be isolating. People often feel ashamed or unsure about where to turn,” she said.

“Silence and avoidance are common reactions, but they can make things worse. Financial counselling through the National Debt Helpline is free and confidential — we want people to know they’re not alone.”

The Money and Mental Health Toolkit and the Money and Mental Health Quiz are available now on the Beyond Blue website.
