Have a say on child safety and youth justice

The Commission of Inquiry into Child Safety is calling on the community to have their say on how the Department acts as a parent to children in care, and how the child safety and youth justice systems overlap.

The community’s input will help inform the Commission’s work in its review of the effectiveness of the child safety system to keep children and Queenslanders safe.

Commissioner, the Honourable Paul Anastassiou KC, said there are serious questions about the connection between children in State care and the youth justice system.

“Around one-third of children in the youth justice system are also under child protection orders, and that overlap demands close scrutiny of whether the State is providing the care and support these children need.

“If you want to have a say on how the department parents children in care and why some end up involved in the youth justice system, then I encourage you to make a submission to the Commission.

“Community input is vital.”

To make a submission head to: www.childsafetyinquiry.qld.gov.au/submissions.

Submissions will close on Friday 23 January.
