Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the discovery of the body of an 18-year-old young surf life saver who went missing while swimming on Buddina Beach on Wednesday 4 March.
Following search and rescue efforts, the man was located deceased about 6pm on Friday 6 March.
Speaking at Noosa Surf Club earlier on Friday, Surf Life Saving Queensland president Gerard O’Brien said the teenager went missing just prior to a training session for the Met Caloundra club for youth members.
“When they bringing everyone in some were out catching waves,” Mr O’Brien said.
“One young man, an 18 year old lad, who grew up in Noosa, did all his Nippers in Sunshine Beach, went to St Andrew’s College, finished there last year, he came off his board and didn’t resurface.
“We and the police and all the emergency services (including water police, POLAIR, jet skis and foot patrols) have been searching for the young man in the days since.
“It is a real tragedy. The movement is banding around the family. The family is Noosa-based. I spoke to the parents yesterday. They are obviously traumatised. A lot of our young members have relationships with the family. It’s close to home.”
Mr O’Brien asked club members to keep the family and friends in their hearts and minds.
