Adorable emu chicks enjoy their new home

Australia Zoo is thrilled to have welcomed three emu chicks in the Wetlands Exhibit for visitors to admire.

Emus are Australia’s tallest bird and inhabit a variety of environments, including arid inland regions, snowy mountains, coastal terrain and woodlands.

Wildlife conservationist Bindi Irwin has shared her excitement on the arrival of these beautiful baby birds who are thriving in their new home here at Australia Zoo.

“The emu chicks are already settling in well and are growing incredibly fast! They love to explore their new habitat and are always together, never leaving each other’s side,” Bindi Irwin said.

These iconic birds have impressive long legs that help them run at high speeds, and are equipped with three large toes on each foot to defend themselves in the wild. A female emu will lay up to 12 beautiful, green eggs before leaving the male to incubate and raise the chicks by himself.

“At Australia Zoo, our goal remains to connect people with wildlife and encourage them to love wildlife. It was Dad’s dream to create a world where people and wildlife would live harmoniously alongside each other, and we’re proud to continue our efforts in wildlife conservation through Australia Zoo and our charity Wildlife Warriors,” Bindi Irwin said.

Australia Zoo recently also welcomed cassowary chicks, marking a first in their 51 year history through a successful breeding program; and four critically endangered Sumatran elephants who are enjoying their expansive new home, Elephantasia.
