The team at Gympie charity Set4Life Australia have got a fun and unique way to treat Dad this Father’s Day with a screening of a very appropriate movie at the historic Majestic Theatre in Pomona.
The movie, Animals Are Beautiful People is a humorous older-style documentary from the makers of the very popular ’80s film, The Gods Must Be Crazy.
Set in the stunning landscapes of Africa’s Kalahari and Namib Deserts, it features a cast of sometimes-comical natural inhabitants, along with a gorgeous soundtrack of classical favourites.
Fittingly, this event will raise funds to go to Set4Life which supports healthcare and education for the remote communities around Yiben in Sierra Leone, West Africa.
Specifically, the proceeds will help support the boarding home accommodation that provides opportunities for up to 40 young people to complete their secondary education and help bring their people out of poverty.
The Majestic Theatre at 3 Factory Street, Pomona is a wonderful community-owned and run attraction in its own right.
Opening in 1923, it’s Queensland’s longest continuously operating picture theatre.
It’s the only theatre in the world that continues to screen silent films, featuring a midday movie every Saturday, with live accompaniment on the 1937 Compton Organ. Careful restorations and renovations over the years have preserved the historic venue which today includes a museum of movie equipment and memorabilia.
Doors for the Father’s Day event will open at 2pm on Sunday 1 September for this novel afternoon of entertainment supporting a great cause.
