Having built up a strong following off the back of a strong creative work ethic, and delivery of music that listeners can relate to, Coolum hip hop artist CaelWhip returns with a new track for 2023 in ‘2 Bucks A Litre’.
Constructed on a confident foundation of beats and vicious flow, the track follows on from CaelWhip’s popular 2022 release, ‘I Don’t Wanna Work’ – a track that put the artist further on the radar of local industry as one to watch. Here, CaelWhip turns his attention to real life issues we’re all having to face; the pressures and constant in-flux nature that comes with having to navigate adulthood.
Recorded at CaelWhip’s home studio on the Sunshine Coast, ‘2 Bucks A Litre’ saw the rapper work with producer rūku on the beat.
The result is a track pumped with charisma and sharp lyricism; the key through-line of “two bucks a litre, I’m trying to keep up…” set to be rattling around the listeners’ head after that initial playback.
For CaelWhip, the track was an organic way for him to air his own frustrations and in doing so, create another piece of honest and to-the-point output.
“‘2 Bucks A Litre’ is my take on the rising costs and pressures of modern life,” he said.
“I use my music and writing as an output a lot of the time. I was at home listening to beats; nothing was really working out, and through my frustration, just started yelling, ‘two bucks a litre, I’m trying to keep up’, which made me laugh at its catchiness. I just continued capturing that energy and wrote this track (and my next release) all in one.”
While ‘2 Bucks A Litre’ may be a way for CaelWhip to flex on the hardships and frustrations of daily life, his ascent as a formidable artist of the East Coast hip hop community has been one to be proud of.
Cutting his teeth at venues on the coast has led CaelWhip to support the likes of Drapht at his recent sold out Solbar show, as well as appearing alongside artists including The Terrys and Peach Fur at Big Weekend Coolum.
To date, Caelwhip’s music has been earning love from the community of fans and industry alike, previous releases landing on the radars of ABC Sunshine Coast, Double J and Triple J.
