Sit back, relax and enjoy an array of digital and live experiences in the final month of what has been a wonderfully reimagined Horizon Festival 2020.
From an indie-folk Open Air concert with The Dreggs, to rock music with Katie Noonan and Eumundi School of Rock, ephemeral performance art at Coolum Beach, The Bunker spoken word grand final, projection art and a celebration of Indigenous artists, it’s an incredible program of inspiration, entertainment and creativity.
Community Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the August program was an excellent way to conclude this year’s festival.
“Horizon Festival 2020 has necessarily undergone a remarkable transformation this year and what better way to bring it to a close than with a wonderful array of music, visual art and spoken word to lift all our spirits through the celebration of art and our indigenous cultural heritage,” Cr Baberowski said.
Horizon Festival Artistic Director Lynne Bradley said the August program rounded out the 2020 three-month rolling festival with a final suite of innovative and entertaining live and digital events.
“The silver lining of going online this year has been increased reach, with arts lovers from around Australia discovering for the first time, the Horizon Festival, our wonderful region, and the talented array of artists that call the Sunshine Coast home.”

REWIND: Monday, August 3 @ 9am
Join us as we REWIND to Horizon Festival 2018 for Dawn Awakening. Dawn Awakening is a special First Nation-focused event that has won a place in the hearts and minds of the Sunshine Coast community. In this short documentary-style video, we speak with Lyndon Davis to reminisce over this beautiful performance with stories, insights and never-before seen footage from the event.

FIELD TRIP: Saturday, August 8, 8.45am – 5pm
Presented in partnership with USC, Arts Front and Australian Network for Art & Technology, this online national research symposium is focussed on creative practice at the intersection of art, science, technology and the environment. The symposium will traverse the continent exploring the ethics of interdisciplinary art and the role of creativity in reimagining the future. The event features some of Australia’s leading artists and includes keynote presentations, panels, interactive artworks and participatory experiences that explore the possibilities of presenting ecologically engaged creative work in virtual environments.

OPEN AIR: Sunday, August 9 @ 4pm
Wrapping up the series for 2020 is popular Australian indie-folk duo, The Dreggs, recorded on a moody day at the spectacular Point Cartwright and streamed into your living room. Musicians Paddy Macrae and Zane Harris grew up on the Sunshine Coast with the ocean by their feet, so it’s only fitting they share with us their coastal vibes and indie-folk / roots tunes in celebration of our beaches and coastline.

COAST TO COAST: Friday, August 14 @ 7pm
Digi Youth Arts presents an online creative coastal exchange, showcasing music, spoken word and visual arts works of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists connected to the so-called Sunshine and Gold Coasts. This program is a part of remake-regenerate-reclaim and has been supported by the Australian Government’s Indigenous Languages and Arts program. Feature artists include Kane Brunjes, Andrew Coleman, Emily Coleman, Cormac Finn, Jain Rhys, ELEEA, Bec Ray, Loki Liddle and Nadia Morrison.

THE BUNKER: Saturday, August 15 @ 5pm
The Bunker Spoken Grand Final returns in 2020 in our first live event since taking shelter in the online format! Our 10 finalists have progressed from the heats and will compete in the grand final event at the Imperial Hotel, Eumundi. The Grand Final features stronger competition than ever before, with local poets performing live and interstate competitors projected live on screen. Joined by the multi-award winning Hollie McNish as our feature poet beaming in from Scotland, we’re set to kick off our return to local venues in true Bunker style and can’t wait for you to join!

BLAK SOCIAL: Saturday, August 22 @ 7pm
Blak Social celebrates the cultural resurgence of Indigenous peoples with a line-up as varied and constellated as our identities. From dance tunes to mesmerising movement to heart-stopping melodics, Blak Social is a celebration of Indigenous artists and the future they create. Feature artists include Diimpa, The Merindas, Elisapie, Katina Olsen and Paula Delaney-Nazarski.

EUMUNDI SCHOOL OF ROCK – DRIVE-IN CONCERT: Saturday, August 29, 5.30pm
Now in its 5th year, Eumundi School of Rock is excited to present this electrifying drive-in concert, jam packed with performances from their 23 young rockers from the class of 2020, the 2019 show band and the Imperial Superband. Students will also be joined by the Mega Teacher band starring five-time ARIA Award winning local songstress Katie Noonan with the wonderful songsmith Jack Carty.

HOMEGROWN: Transience
Wednesday, August 26, 5pm.
Transience, created by artists Glen Manning and Kathy Daly, is a short-film of their signature etchings on the sand of our spectacular Sunshine Coast beaches, exploring our connection with the marine and coastal landscapes through the synergy of art and movement. Captured by local filmmaker Fisch Rasy, this beautiful short-film will showcase this ephemeral, multidisciplinary artwork, allowing us to see the sand inscriptions unfold and then be swept away by the incoming tides at First Bay in Coolum.

HOMEGROWN: Trace
Friday, August 28, 6pm
Projection artist James Muller presents Trace, a short-film featuring James’ signature large-scale projections onto the ocean at Mooloolaba Beach. The film will contain an accompanying soundscape by renowned local musician Shannon Sol Carrol, delivering a multi-sensory experience of Mooloolaba Beach as you’ve never seen before. Trace invites us to consider our connections to the places we frequent and asks us what has changed during our recent experiences with COVID-19 and isolation?
