’Shock and grief’ at dingo cull

Traditional K’gari owners, represented by Native Title holders, the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation have reacted with shock and dismay to the killing of dingoes following the death of Canadian visitor Piper James.

“Today is a deeply sad day for the Butchulla people, and I want to acknowledge the profound emotional impact this news has had on our community,“ BAC contact person Christine Royan said.

“We recognise the grief and pain this brings, especially given the cultural significance of the wongari to the Butchulla people.

“At 1:30pm on Sunday, 25 January, we were informed by a (DETSI) representative that QPWS operational staff had received Ministerial direction on Saturday, 24 January 2026, to proceed with the humane euthanasia of identified wongari (dingoes) in the pack associated with Piper James’ death.

“QPWS staff have carried out this direction.

“It is important to note that we learned of these actions only after they had taken place, and we were not involved in the decision-making process or any related discussions.

“This exclusion has been deeply disappointing and has caused considerable distress.

“Please be assured that BAC, as the Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC) for K’gari, is actively seeking more information and clarity about what has occurred.

“Our priority remains to ensure that our cultural protocols are respected and upheld throughout this process.

“We stand together during this difficult time and will continue to keep the community updated as we learn more.

“Our commitment is to transparency, cultural integrity, and supporting one another through this period of collective grief,“ she said.
