Traditional owners blast dingo kill

Today is a deeply sad day for the Butchulla people, and I want to begin by acknowledging the profound emotional impact this news has had on our community. We recognize the grief and pain this brings, especially given the cultural significance of the wongari to the Butchulla people.

At 1:30pm on Sunday, 25 January 2025, we were informed by a representative from (the Environment Department) that QPWS operational staff had received Ministerial direction on Saturday, 24 January 2026, to proceed with the humane euthanasia of identified wongari in the pack associated with Piper James’ death.

QPWS Staff have carried out this direction

It is important to note that we learned of these actions only after they had taken place, and we were not involved in the decision-making process or any related discussions. This exclusion has been deeply disappointing and has caused considerable distress.

Please be assured that Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation (BAC), as the Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC) for K’gari, is actively seeking more information and clarity about what has occurred. Our priority remains to ensure that our cultural protocols are respected and upheld throughout this process.

We stand together during this difficult time and will continue to keep the community updated as we learn more. Our commitment is to transparency, cultural integrity, and supporting one another through this period of collective grief.

If you would like to discuss this letter further, please contact the Christine Royan (BAC contact person) email chris.royan@bac-kgari.org.
