Summer safety warning

The State Government is urging families to prioritise safety while enjoying the warmer months in Noosa and across Queensland.

The State’s ‘Be Summer Safe’ campaign is aimed at preventing accidents in the home and backyard, with a focus on popular summer products such as portable pools, trampolines, barbecues, and children’s toys containing button batteries.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity Deb Frecklington said the campaign was about keeping every Queenslander safe while enjoying the season.

“Summer is a time for families to relax, cool down, and have fun, and we want to see everyone enjoy it safely,” Ms Frecklington said.

Parents are being reminded that some of the biggest risks come from everyday items in the home. In 2024-25, there were 15 drowning deaths of children under five nationwide, with half occurring in backyard swimming pools. Across Australia, one child each month is seriously injured after swallowing or inserting a button battery.

The campaign urges families to take simple precautions:

– Portable pools: Always supervise children, know CPR, ensure pools meet safety standards, and pack them away when not in use.

– Pool toys and swimming aids: Check age and weight restrictions and supervise children at all times.

– Button batteries: Secure battery compartments in children’s toys and make sure they cannot be opened by little hands.

– Trampolines: Use only Australian-standard trampolines on soft ground, supervise children, and limit jumping to one child at a time.

– Barbecue brushes: Inspect brushes before use and discard any with loose or damaged bristles to avoid health risks.

“Whether kids are jumping into a pool in the backyard or playing with toys, supervision is key to preventing serious injuries or tragedies,” Ms Frecklington said.

The Office of Fair Trading is working with regulators nationwide to deliver the ‘Be Summer Safe’ campaign and provide advice to households across Queensland.
