The Independent Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton MP welcomes the announcement of a Parliamentary Inquiry by the State Development, Infrastructure and Works Committee with a commitment to consider all research and opinions to curb the issues being faced.
“The Noosa community appreciates the announcement following our advocacy and call for action last Parliament sitting to see an end to the unlawful riding and illegal e-motorbikes. May this inquiry, and
recommendations from, deliver real improvements for safety on our roads and pathways,” Ms Bolton said.
Following Sandy’s adjournment speech in Parliament on 1 April, she provided recommendations from first responders, local community groups and residents on what urgent reforms are needed to increase community safety to the Minister for TMR, Minister for Education and the Minister for Police.
“These include enhanced monitoring, awareness and education in schools, needed legislation and enforcement powers, insurance, registration for legal electric bikes as well as support for local government to introduce or strengthen local regulations on where these devices can be ridden, as well ensuring compliance of speed restrictions at the point of sale,” Ms Bolton said.
With the federal election cycle almost completed, residents are also encouraged to raise the need for tighter import controls with their Commonwealth Parliament representatives. Electric bikes, scooters and motorbikes that do not comply with Australian Design Rules are being imported from overseas and purchased online, which is only exasperating the issue.
Noosa’s State MP will continue her work and will keep the community informed as more progress is made, including when submissions are open to the inquiry and when responses are received to recommendations provided to the ministers.
“We thank the Minister for TMR for listening to our calls and look forward to the inquiry being undertaken as a matter of urgency before any further fatalities or injuries occur. Unfortunately, a motion to have the
committee report delivered by 1 August this year failed, with it to be by 30 March 2026 which I find deeply disappointing,” Ms Bolton said.
