Remembering Gwen

Gwendoline “Gwen” Torney, a cherished member of the Noosa community for more than four decades, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 25.

Her vibrant presence was felt across the town, from the gardens she lovingly tended to the hospital wards where she volunteered, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Born Gwendoline Ross in Ballarat, Victoria, on March 11, 1932, Gwen was the eldest of three children.

Her early years were shaped by frequent moves as her father, Donald Ross, managed hotels in Fish Creek, Beechworth, and Boree Creek.

Despite the constant relocations, Gwen excelled academically and athletically, attending Albury High School as a boarder and representing her school in hockey and tennis.

In 1952, Gwen married Alan Torney, the love of her life, and together they raised four sons.

Tragedy struck in 1974 when Alan passed away from cancer at just 47. Gwen, then 42, ensured her sons were settled before embarking on adventurous overseas travels, eventually making Noosaville her home.

Gwen was among the first residents of the “Bedarra” townhouse complex on Munna Point and played a key role in shaping the close-knit community.

She was active in local life, joining gardening and luncheon clubs and volunteering as a “Pink Lady” at Noosa Hospital. Her warmth, generosity, and humour made her a friend to many and a respected member of the area.

Gwen’s family life in Noosa was marked by deep love for her sons. Her second son, Ian, who relocated from Albury in 1986 and was Gwen’s only local family support, sadly passed away last October after a brief illness.

Ian had initially purchased a townhouse in the Bedarra complex before building his own home.

Gwen never fully recovered from his loss, and her health declined rapidly in the months that followed.

Friends recall Gwen fondly.

Ann Johnson, a close companion and fellow hospital volunteer, described her as “kind, generous, and the heart of any gathering,” while retired family doctor David Kirkman remembered Gwen’s “instantly bright spirit and enduring kindness” when she first arrived in Noosa in 1984.

Gwen celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by friends, a testament to the lasting connections she fostered. Her legacy of community, friendship, and compassion will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to know her.

A celebration of Gwen’s life will be held at Noosa Golf Club on Sunday, February 22, commencing at 1pm, and all her friends are warmly invited to attend.

Gwendoline Torney is survived by her three sons and countless friends across Noosa.
