Discover more about the environment

Coolum and North Shore Coast Care (CANSCC) aims to share its knowledge of local wildlife and the environment through a series of three Family Eco-Discovery workshops, designed for families with young children aged 4 -11 years.

The first workshop on 9 June 9, titled “Special Species” will focus on some of the unique creatures in the local area, including glossy black cockatoos, koalas and Richmond birdwing butterflies. Children will learn through hands-on activities about the relationship between these vulnerable animals and plants and actions needed to protect them.

Organiser, Di Goodwillie said, “These community events involve self-discovery and are fun and practical for a diverse age range. They are a great Sunday morning activity with a community focus and a good way to introduce children to our natural environment.”

The Eco-Discovery workshops have been run by volunteers (young and old) for the past six years and have been enjoyed by hundreds of participants. Since 2016, Junior Eco-Leaders (aged 12-15 years) have played a large role in the organising and presenting of the workshops.

The Junior Eco-Leaders were joint winners of the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Environmental and Sustainability award in 2018 in recognition of their voluntary contribution to the environment, including assisting with the Eco-Discovery workshops.

The Special Species workshop will be held on Sunday 9 June at Noosa Parks Association Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Wallace Park, Noosaville from 10 am- 12noon. Cost is a gold coin donation. Come early to register and explore the display of feathers, butterflies and other treasures on the Discovery Table.
