Cyclone Alfred update: How to prepare in Noosa

Noosa beaches remain closed as damaging surf continues as of 3pm Tuesday 4 March.

The focus is on preparation for coming days when Noosa will start to anticipate high winds, inundation of lower areas and higher rainfall, with the extent dependent on where TC Alfred makes landfall.

COUNCIL WASTE SERVICES

Council’s Eumundi Road waste and recycling centre will close from midday Thursday and remain closed Friday. Its reopening will depend on site conditions and weather – check Council’s website for updates.

Pomona and Cooroy waste transfer stations are closed until further notice.

Residential wheelie bins won’t be emptied on Thursday or Friday. Residents in areas usually serviced on these days should wheel their bins out on Monday next week once waste collections resume, weather permitting. The areas affected by this change include:

Noosaville (from Gibson Rd nth)

Noosa Heads

Weyba Park (the area behind Aldi)

Bluefin Court, Noosaville

Noosa Waters (Saltwater Avenue and east)

All Beach areas (Sunrise, Sunshine, Castaways, Marcus and Peregian)

Bins that would normally be emptied Wednesday, will be emptied as normal, plus commercial services (hotels motels, businesses) will also be serviced Wednesday (Roberts St, Gympie Tce, Weyba Rd, Thomas St, Albert St, Elizabeth St, Munna Crt, Noosa Parade, Peza Crt serviced Wednesday).

Council will pick up waste and recycling, no green waste.

All bins must be removed from the kerbside to be placed securely within properties by 4pm Wednesday. This is very important as bins can become projectiles in high winds.

SANDBAG SUPPLY

Noosa Council has opened an additional sandbag filling station to help cope with demand. The new location is the boat ramp, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville. The full list of locations is:

Tewantin – Noosa District Sports Grounds, off McKinnon Drive (near the netball courts)

Tewantin – SES Shed, Goodwin Street

Noosaville – Boat ramp, Gympie Tce, Noosaville

Cooroy – SES Shed, 26 Emerald St

Pomona – SES Shed, Hospital St & Pomona Showgrounds, 26 Exhibition St

Cooran – Behind the Cooran Store, Pioneer Park, King St & Fire Shed, 50 Queen St

Kin Kin – Rural Fire Shed, Main St

Boreen Point – SES Shed, Hector St

Cootharaba – Rural Fire Service, Davis Rd

Residents must bring their own shovels to the fill their sandbags. Residents should only take sandbags if they’re required, such as those people living in low lying areas. Please be patient as sandbag and sand supplies will be continually replenished. More than 25 cubic metres of sand has been collected from the Tewantin SES site alone.

BEACHES AND FLOODING

Beaches remain closed. Damaging surf continues and gales with damaging wind gusts to 120km/hr are expected to develop along the south-east Queensland and island communities between Tewantin and Grafton on Wednesday. Residents are encouraged not to go sightseeing and stay well clear of coastal areas and cliff faces.

As there remains a potential for storm surge people in known flooding spots should use today to continue to make preparations.

VEHICLE FERRY

The Noosa North Shore vehicle ferry will cease operating from 6pm Wednesday night.
