Noosa District State High School Sport Coordinator Ron Greentree has pledged to shave his head next Friday if the school raises $1000 to support the Leukaemia Foundation’s Shave for a Cure.
Mr Greentree’s wife, Eumundi State School teacher Colleen Greentree, was diagnosed with breast cancer last November and has started to receive treatment that has resulted in the loss of her hair.
Mr Greentree addressed the Year 11 cohort at their parade this morning and passionately implored the students to support his fundraising efforts.
“My wife found losing her hair a very traumatic experience, and I want to do something to show my support,” he said.
“I really like my hair too, so I won’t shave it off unless $1000 is raised by next Friday.”
The annual Shave for the Cure event raises funds for medical research into finding a cure for blood cancer.
Leukaemia diagnosis is fairly commonplace with 4527 new cases diagnosed in 2020; many NDSHS students and staff have personally witnessed the toll cancer has on those battling it and the sense of despair and helplessness experienced by close families and friends.
The staff and students at NDSHS, upon hearing about Mr Greentree’s wife’s cancer journey are keen to support the cause.
“I felt I really needed to do something this year,” Mr Greentree said.
Year 10 Deputy Principal Timothy Robinson announced at the Year 10 parade that he would donate $100 towards Mr Greentree’s cause.
You can help Mr Greentree reach this goal by making a donation at the NDSHS front office.
“Even the smallest donation would mean a lot, but could mean the world to those affected by cancer,” Mr Greentree said.
