Noosa Citizen of the Year, Lilias Garbett, dies peacefully at 92

Noosa Citizen of the Year 1996, Lilias Garbett, died peacefully in her home on Wednesday 30 April at the grand age of 92.

On Australia Day in 1996, she was awarded Noosa Citizen of the Year for her tireless work as a volunteer on many boards, including president of Tewantin-Noosa Red Cross, Queensland Cancer Fund, the University of the Third Age, RSPCA, Music Society, Noosa Arts Theatre and Noosa Arts Drama Festival.

After that, she went on to become the inaugural president of Noosa Probus, of which she was instrumental in setting up, and was heavily involved in wildlife groups as well as Million Paws Walk and Beethoven, and she helped to raise tens of thousands of dollars for various animal welfare groups.

Lilias loved performing on stage and even played the organ in church every Sunday.

Her only niece and goddaughter, Cathy Edmonds said, “She was always glamorous, never dull, witty, funny and highly intelligent.“

“Lilias partner, Kevin McCormack, has taken great care of her for the past couple of decades.“
