Point Cartwright water reservoir mural unveiled

It’s a little difficult to ‘unveil’ a 17-metre-high artwork, but that’s what happened on Monday at the Point Cartwright water reservoir.

The impressive ‘Subsurface’ design was repainted as part of Unitywater’s Community Artwork Program.

Unitywater Executive Manager Customer and Community Katherine Gee said the mural was originally painted in 2016 and needed some maintenance after weathering the elements in this location.

“We asked the community what they wanted to see and they voted to keep the original design,” she said.

“We are thrilled to be unveiling it and it’s even more spectacular the second time around.

“This is an iconic landmark on the Sunshine Coast and our community were keen to see artwork that could be enjoyed years to come.”

Ms Gee said there were some slight tweaks to the design through the community consultation process, particularly with traditional landowners.

“The Norfolk Pines on the original artwork have changed to Bunya Pines to be respectful of the cultural heritage of this area,” she said.

“Our local artists The Brightsiders have done a fabulous job, yet again, to transform one of our highly visible assets.”

The Brightsiders artist Jordan Bruce said it had been an interesting experience returning to the site of an original artwork.

“There’s definitely been feelings of nostalgia, having painted this reservoir in 2016,” he said.

“It’s been an exciting time and we were able to use different techniques for the new artwork. Each time we create one of these murals, we’re pushing our artistic styles further and it’s awesome to see the finished product.”
