Butter factory turns up heat

The Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre is set to showcase the Sunshine Coast’s next wave of creative talent when its much-anticipated biennial 40 under 40 exhibition returns next month.

Running from February 5 to March 15, the exhibition brings together 40 artists under the age of 40, offering audiences a snapshot of the region’s emerging and early-career creatives as they begin to firmly establish themselves in the art world.

CBFAC artistic director said the exhibition represents a natural progression for many local artists.

“Through our annual Creative Gen exhibition we see the beginnings of artistic practice in high school students,” she said. “With 40 under 40, we’re watching the next level — artists who have found their voice and are starting to build real careers, many of whom go on to regular solo exhibitions here and interstate.”

More than just an exhibition, 40 under 40 is a prize-based show, with the Countryside Realty Noosa Art Prize providing meaningful financial and professional support to participating artists. Additional backing from organisations including Lantana, Regional Arts Australia, Flying Arts and Bendigo Bank further strengthens opportunities for artists to develop and sustain their practice.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is its opening night, which has become a signature social event on the local arts calendar. Described as more festival than formal opening, the launch features live music, food vans and a relaxed atmosphere designed to bring the community together.

Last held in 2024, the opening attracted more than 400 people. This year’s celebration will take place on February 20 from 6pm, with live performances by Wifecult and Jack Dylan and the Villains, and craft beers supplied by Your Mates Brewing Co. Tickets are available via the Cooroy Butter Factory website.

February also marks a strong month for pottery at CBFAC. While 40 under 40 fills the downstairs gallery, the upstairs members gallery will host Combustion, a diverse exhibition by CBFAC pottery members. Term one pottery courses are already underway, with bookings opening in February for introductory hand-building and wheel-throwing sessions in early April, and term two courses beginning later that month.

Visitors can also browse the on-site artisan store, showcasing work by local makers. The Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre is open daily except Mondays.
