Teen sentenced over Tewantin torture

A 16-year-old who was involved in the torture of a teenage girl at a Tewantin home last year has been sentenced to two years’ detention, wholly suspended with a conditional release order.

The girl, who cannot be named, faced Maroochydore District Court in June.

The Noosa community was left shocked by the incident that occurred in March 2023, where a girl was filmed while being assaulted, taunted and cut with a knife over four hours.

On 13 March 2023, investigations led police to charge three girls, who legally cannot be named, and at the time were aged 12, 13, and 14-years-old.

The horrifying footage of the alleged beating was watched by millions online after going viral on TikTok, where social media users started a trending hashtag requesting justice, all the while starting a witch hunt for the alleged attackers.

Videos were shared on TikTok of people claiming to be trashing the home where the incident occurred.

The home on Waratah Close, Tewantin was completely destroyed in a house fire at about 1.30am on Tuesday 28 March, 2023.

The next day, Sunshine Coast police held a media conference to call out vigilantism, where Sunshine Coast Police Superintendent Craig Hawkins said his message was to let justice take its course.

“An investigation has been undertaken, the perpetrators of the torture events and offences have been arrested and are before the courts,” Superintendent Hawkins said.
