Driving tyre recycling in the right way

In Australia each year, 56 million tyres reach their end life, but only 10 per cent of those are recycled locally, leaving many to be illegally dumped, stockpiled or disposed of in landfill.

With accreditation from Tyre Stewardship Australia and its long-standing relationship with Tyrecycle, JAX Tyres & Auto is ensuring the business is playing its role in the responsible disposal of customer tyres.

Through the TSA program, JAX Tyres & Auto is driving towards matching the number of tyres sold with tyres that have been recycled – with the number of tyre units recycled in 2020 equating to 95.15 per cent of tyres sold by the retail business that same year.

JAX Tyres & Auto Noosaville has really championed the cause, with an equivalent of 93.98 per cent tyre units recycled through the program compared to tyres sold in Sunshine Coast and surrounds last year.

Through this initiative, the local business can help to prevent these tyres being illegally dumped or added to local landfill, instead having them broken down so they can be used to build roads or playground equipment flooring across the country.

Donna Earley from JAX Tyres & Auto Noosaville said she was enthusiastic about recycling.

“It’s great to know that we are recycling because I’m quite passionate about it,“ she said.

“I try to do as much recycling at home and in the business as I can. I take my coffee grounds home and put them on my veggie garden.“

According to TSA, of the 56 million tyres end of life tyres each year, 29 million go to productive outcomes while 27 million are stockpiled or dumped.

“We don’t want the tyres going into landfill or being burnt, or left in temporary rented fields, which is really dangerous for the local fauna and flora and waterways and population,“ she said.

Donna said it was important for consumers to ensure that their tyre supplier was contributing responsibly to disposal.
