Female-founded start-up cleans up

A female-founded Sunshine Coast start-up that’s on a mission to prove that doing good is good for business has won the Promoting Sustainability Award at the 2023 Queensland Tesltra Best of Business Awards.

Launched out of a garage in the midst of the pandemic, founders Ami Bateman and Sian Murray set out to reduce single-use plastics and toxic cleaning chemicals used in homes, by creating Australia’s first just-add-water concentrated bars that dissolve to make a range of different cleaning products.

“Most people don’t know that when they purchase everyday cleaning products, they’re buying a product that’s 95 per cent water, often filled with toxic cleaning chemicals and then wrapped in a single-use plastic bottle. The industry is highly unregulated, so we set out to create an effective alternative that’s better for people and planet,” Ami said.

With over 20,000 entries to the prestigious 2023 Telstra Best of Business awards, winning the state award as a bootstrapped, female-founded business was no easy feat.

“From day one we set out to prove that doing good is good for business, so winning this award really highlights that we’ve done just that. Now more than ever, we are feeling the impacts of climate change, so to be recognised as the sustainability leader in the state at such a crucial time is both an honour and responsibility we don’t take lightly,” Sian said.

Since launching its eCommerce store just two years ago, Pleasant State is now in over 20,000 homes across Australia and New Zealand. It’s this rapid growth that has allowed them to stop over 130,000 single-use plastic bottles from going to landfills, raise over 43,000 for its charity partners and generated over 65,000 litres of toxin-free cleaning solutions.

The team at Pleasant State is looking forward to using this momentum to keep innovating and growing its impact in 2023.

With its sights set on international expansion Pleasant State will be part of the SBE Australia 2023 Global cohort and have big plans to announce an exciting opportunity for their community to claim their stake in the brand to be announced in the coming months.
