Baggage boost for airport

Noosa travellers heading interstate or overseas can expect smoother departures following the completion of the first stage of Sunshine Coast Airport’s $170 million terminal redevelopment.

The airport has officially opened a new state-of-the-art outbound baggage handling facility, a major infrastructure upgrade designed to support growing passenger numbers from across the region — including Noosa, one of the Coast’s strongest tourism markets.

With more Noosa residents and visitors choosing to fly from Sunshine Coast Airport, the new system is expected to significantly improve efficiency, reliability and security screening processes.

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Chris Mills said the facility marked a critical milestone in the airport’s long-term expansion plans.

“Investing in critical infrastructure like this means we can grow, meet the needs of our airline partners, and continue to support national and international connectivity,” Mr Mills said.

“This new facility is the first major step in our commitment to provide the best service and experience for travellers.

“Behind every smooth passenger journey is state-of-the-art technology and security that delivers a seamless travel experience.”

The new baggage system includes more than 300 metres of conveyor belts and two large make-up loops, effectively doubling the airport’s previous baggage handling capacity.

General Manager of Operations Kate McCreery-Carr said the upgrade would streamline the process from check-in to aircraft loading.

“The new facility includes more than 300 metres of new conveyor systems including two large make-up loops to support increased baggage capacity, doubling what was originally here at the airport,” she said.

“We have also upgraded our scanning equipment in accordance with federal government requirements.

“The new technology allows for more advanced inspection of baggage, while streamlining the process for both passengers and airport staff.”

The advanced Rapiscan CT screening technology improves detection capability while reducing the need for manual bag checks, boosting both accuracy and efficiency.

Construction of the first stage began in May 2025 and was completed in just seven months, supporting more than 500 jobs.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the airport upgrade would strengthen the region’s economy and connectivity.

“A strong, efficient airport improves connectivity, which is essential for regional development,” Mayor Natoli said.

“It makes the Sunshine Coast more accessible, supports local businesses, and enhances our profile nationally and internationally.”

The airport is forecasting strong growth, with more than 1.8 million passengers expected in the 2026 financial year and 2.4 million by 2030. Sydney and Melbourne routes — popular with Noosa travellers — now have more capacity than at any point in the airport’s history.

Further expansion works are already underway, including a new check-in and arrivals hall, with the terminal footprint set to almost double in size. The full redevelopment is scheduled for completion in 2027.
