Thunder cricket season off to a good start

Thunder senior training started last Thursday night with a very good roll up of past and new players. Training will continue for the time being on Thursday afternoons from 5.15pm with Ben Laughlin in charge.

Experienced, mature, new and confident junior cricketers are all welcome to join in this pre-season training. From Tuesday 24 August, training will also be held weekly on Tuesday afternoons. The club is always looking to increase the number of players and registrations are now open.

The team which won the First-Grade premiership last season and went through the season undefeated is looking strong again this year.

Grade 2 was very unlucky to miss out on the finals and will be a better team this season with the addition of some new players. Grades 4 and 6 may change their grades but expectations are high for all the lower grades teams.

Women’s cricket

Calling all mums, daughters, grandmas and aunties… you are invited to come to the cricket club at Read Park on Friday 19 August (4-5.30pm) to find more about this exciting initiative.

Along with Cricket Australia and Queensland Cricket, the club is dedicated to increasing women’s and girls’ participation in cricket.

And this is where it all starts.

This Come and Try event is an opportunity to see what women’s and girls’ cricket on the Sunshine Coast looks like. Women’s cricket gives you the opportunity to either get serious and compete… or to just meet up regularly with a fun and social group of cricketing women and girls.

The season of cricket caters for players of all ages… teenagers to old-agers.

For the younger girls who would love to get into cricket, we have the Junior Blaster and Master Blaster programs and also the club’s junior competition which caters for girls and boys mixed teams.

For more details on women’s and girls’ vricket, come along to the Come and Try Day. For even more info on cricket for the younger girls have a look at the Master Blasters and Junior Handbook on the Play Cricket page on our website.

Facilities and ground update

Work is continuing on the new terraced area at the front of the clubhouse at Read Park. It has been expanded from its original design and is looking great. New lighting has been installed in the area as well as extra security lighting around the clubhouse.

The Dale Officer Oval sight screens will arrive in the next couple of weeks and should be in place before the season starts.

The new clubhouse and facilities at the McKinnon Drive Complex are still a way off so the Noosa Shire Council is erecting some temporary sheds that will be used as change rooms. There will also be temporary toilets adjacent to the netball clubhouse dressing rooms.

Junior winter cricket

The Tewantin-Noosa U13 team finished on top of the ladder in the Winter T20 competition and will be hosting their grand final in the coming weeks.

The Under 17 finished third and the Under 15 finished unplaced. It was great to see all those juniors taking the opportunity to play cricket in the offseason.
