Falcons take on PNG Hunters in footy blockbuster

Rugby league fans can enjoy a feast of footy at affordable prices at Sunshine Coast Stadium this Saturday 15 March.

The headline act will see the Sunshine Coast’s Hostplus Cup team begin its 2025 campaign against the thrilling PNG Hunters, and this will be supported by not one – but four – curtain-raisers, featuring local gun representative junior teams.

The Falcons, who had a bye in Round 1, will enjoy a home encounter with the Hunters from 5pm and will be spurred on by the memory of the PNG side ending their finals run last season.

The Falcons Hostplus Cup side will host 10 home games at Sunshine Coast Stadium in 2025, from March to September.

Sunshine Coast Division 3 Councillor Tim Burns encouraged those who had not yet experienced a Falcons game day to come along.

“Falcons home games are a fantastic experience for anyone who likes rugby league or just wants to get out of the house and enjoy a beautiful Sunshine Coast autumn or winter’s day,” Cr Burns said.

“With tickets only $12 for adults, $6 for juniors (13-17 years) and children 12 and under free, it’s an affordable way to enjoy high quality state league sport with the whole family.

“There is also a range of junior and senior season memberships with reserved grandstand seating for every home game available via the SC Falcons website.

“There’s always plenty for little ones to enjoy at the footy with the chance to run around on the field between games for these young aspiring players.”

Returning for their second year in the competition, the Falcons BMD Premiership women’s side is revved up for a big year after finishing fifth on the ladder in 2024.

The BMD side will play its first home game of the season later in the year, on Saturday 21 June, at 3.30pm, before the Hostplus Cup side play at 5pm. Both teams will take on the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

Sunshine Coast Falcons CEO Chris Flannery said this season was shaping as a blockbuster.

“The Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership teams have been training hard and are looking strong for the 2025 season and we’re keen to see how it takes shape,” Mr Flannery said.

“We’ve seen plenty of promising players come through our junior grades and reach the NRL and NRLW so it’s always enjoyable to come down to Sunshine Coast Stadium and see who the next superstar could be.

“Former local juniors Tyson Smoothy, Trent Loiero, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Hayley Maddick are just some of the Falcons superstars who are now playing NRL and NRLW.

“We’re grateful to have a home ground that’s the best in the competition. Our ongoing partnership with Sunshine Coast Stadium really allows us to focus on our game and prepare our players for their potential future in the NRL or NRLW.

“I’d really encourage you to come down and watch the teams play if you never been. The players really love feeling the support of our town when running out for a big game.”
