Pedestrians, including school children, will now have safer journeys thanks to a new bridge in Eumundi.
The pedestrian bridge, which spans the North Maroochy River near Seib Road, has been under construction since January 2025.
Almost 300 metres of new pathway and boardwalk were also part of the project, connecting the new bridge into the existing footpath network.
For many years, people in Eumundi have been calling for a pedestrian solution in the area, with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) collaborating with Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) in designing the project.
The project was funded by TMR and the Australian Government under the Road Safety Program, with SCC leading construction of the bridge – which now becomes a council asset.
The highlight of the construction phase was when the 30.2-tonne bridge was lifted into place as a single component, requiring the overnight closure of the Eumundi—Noosa Road.
The large single span was designed with the intent of minimising impacts to the waterway during flood events. The absence of pylons reduces the interruption to the flow of water and therefore minimises the impact on upstream river levels.
The bridge was painted off site with a protective paint system that is designed to last many years before any maintenance painting of the structure is required.
In addition to the pedestrian infrastructure, the project included safety improvements, including asphalt resurfacing and an improved right-turn facility for eastbound traffic turning into Seib Road. A guardrail has been installed on either side of the road bridge spanning the North Maroochy River.
Transport and Main Roads Regional Director, North Coast, Scott Whitaker said, “Pedestrians in Eumundi can now cross the North Maroochy River much more safely, thanks to this new infrastructure.”
“Road safety is TMR’s top priority, and the Queensland Government is committed to improving conditions for all road users, including pedestrians.”
