Queensland’s coronavirus status has reached 1001 with five new cases detected overnight.

The five cases announced yesterday had been revised and Health Minister Steven Miles announced that there were only two cases detected, the lowest case rate since early March.

Mr Miles said that 21 infected patients are currently being treated in hospital, 11 of whom are in intensive care.

New cases are still trending downwards, but Dr Jeannette Young is warning the state is not through the worst of it.

Dr Young said while the current figures are looking good, they are expected to jump again as Australian travellers return home from overseas.

“We do expect that there will probably be some increased cases because of the numbers of people returning from overseas,” she said.

“We know that eventually we will see larger numbers of cases but because of the work that’s been done today, our health system here in Queensland will be able to cope with those larger numbers of cases.

“The strategies in place are working and Queenslanders have heard the message and are minimising the amount of contact they have with other people and minimising the time that they spend outside their own home.”

“We’ve had over 700 cases out of our thousand from people who contracted the infection overseas,” she said.

“Then we’ve had a further additional 160 cases, most of those because they’ve contracted it from someone who contracted it overseas.”

Mr Miles stated that restrictions in Queensland will be revised once again in five weeks time.

To date, 77,727 tests have been conducted in Queensland.
