End of era for Cookmans

The end of an era has descended upon Noosa Junction.

The late George and Jean Cookman’s property at 15 Sunshine Beach Road has been sold to the next generation to continue a legacy.

George Cookman Snr built the family home there in the late 1950s.

“Living in the Junction was mum, dad, myself and my three younger brothers,“ Judy Sinclair (nee Cookman) said.

“My siblings and myself left our family home to begin our own lives while mum and dad stayed in the property until dad passed away in March 1988. Mum lived in the property for many years finally moving in the mid 2000s. I and two of my brothers, George Jnr and David, still live in Tewantin today. Sadly, our Mum passed away in August 2021, followed by our younger brother Kenny who passed away in December 2021.“

The original building is one of only two freehold buildings left in the Junction, and has been in the same family for 66 years. Over the years it has been home to a range of different businesses occupying the tenancy.

“Firstly, Prongers from Gympie, with Robert Brough the manager. Following on from Prongers, Mr George Clist began Noosa Real Estate. From real estate to surf wear with Rick Bennet to Souvenirs and the Hertz car rental with Doug and Janette Uphill. This led to the current tenants that have occupied the tenancy of clothing and apparel, John and Chris Jennings, for the past 18 years,“ Judy said.

“Finally, as we close the curtains on the end of the Jean Cookman – Unofficial Mayoress of Noosa Junction era, we are proud to say the property was purchased on 18 July 2024, by a Noosa local – Mr Richard Klinge. We wish you well Richard, and thank you Noosa for embracing the Cookmans.“
