The State Government has announced a significant investment in Queensland’s health services, allocating more than $160 million to deliver 30 new perinatal mental health beds across the state, including the Sunshine Coast, ensuring easier access to vital care for new mothers and their families.
The investment is a core part of the Government’s Easier Access to Health Services Plan and is intended to address Queensland’s ongoing health crisis by boosting mental health support in key regional and metropolitan areas.
The regional expansion includes a substantial increase in beds in facilities accessible to Sunshine Coast residents and nearby regions and includes eight new beds on the Sunshine Coast.
Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls stated that the expansion will more than triple the number of public perinatal mental health beds available across Queensland.
“Across Queensland, this expansion will more than triple the number of public perinatal mental health beds available and ensure we can provide more care for mums, babies and families, closer to home,” Minister Nicholls said.
“These mother-baby beds will allow new mums to access specialist mental healthcare while staying close to their little ones, ensuring both receive the support and connection they need during this critical time.”
“These investments are not just about beds, they are about giving Queensland families confidence that when they reach out for help, someone will be there to respond with compassion and expertise.”
Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls said the funding for more perinatal beds was a core part of the State Government’s Easier Access to Health Services Plan.
